The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has brought back a murder suspect from Dubai with the help of Interpol and arrested him.

Arif Sarkar, 40, was extradited on Wednesday, three years after the murder, a media statement said.

Arif was named in the murder case filed over the shooting of Shibpur Upazila Chairman and freedom fighter Harun Or Rashid Khan, 75, at his house on Feb 25, 2023. He died three months later.

The PBI later handed over Arif to Shibpur Police after his arrest in Shahjalal International Airport. Arif was facing an arrest warrant.

Following the gun attack, Harun was rushed to Shibpur Upazila Health Complex. But as his condition worsened, he was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. He was later flown to India on Apr 13, 2023.

Harun was brought back home on May 1.

The freedom fighter was again hospitalised six days later. He was kept under intensive care for 13 days starting May 19.

He died there on May 31.

His son filed the case with the police station naming six suspects and against 10-12 unidentified people.

At that time, police said the prime suspect and three others were in Dubai.

The PBI was tasked with the investigation on Jun 23 of that year.

In July last year, another suspect Mohsin Miah, 46, was extradited with the help of the Interpol from Dubai.

Mohsin divulged information about Arif and other suspects, says the PBI, which claims having “significant evidence” of Arif being linked to the murder.

The National Central Bureau, Interpol's regional office in Dhaka, applied to know his whereabouts in the UAE.

When Arif was located, a Bangladesh court issued an arrest warrant on the PBI's request to bring him back. The PBI subsequently sought an Interpol red notice.

The PBI submitted the chargesheet in November last year.

Dubai Police recently arrested Arif and informed its Bangladesh counterpart of the development.

After that, a joint team of the PBI and the Police Headquarters brought Arif back.

SM Mostain Hossain, special superintendent of the PBI in Narsingdi, said they have arrested 12 suspects so far.
