Six people have been arrested in connection with the murder of a young man in Fatullah, Narayanganj, police said.
The victim’s wife, a Baul artiste, is among those detained.
Investigating officer Sub-Inspector Yasin Arafat of Fatulla Model Police Station said two of the arrestees, Mehedi, identified with a single name, and his brother-in-law Abdur Rahman gave confessional statements under Section 164 before a court on Wednesday.
Narayanganj District Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammad Mizanur Rahman Munshi said the killing was linked to the wife’s “extramarital relationship”.
They were arrested on Tuesday. Another fugitive named Md Mamun is involved in the incident, police said.
Police recovered the blood-stained body of the victim, 35-year-old Sumon Khalifa, dumped on a road at Kashipur Union on Monday.
The arrested are, victim’s wife Baul artist Sonia Akhter, 22, Mehedi Hasan alias Yusuf, 42, Abdur Rahman, 28, Billal Hossain, 58, Alamgir Howlader, 45, and Nannu Mia, 55.
Sumon lived in a rented house in the Signboard area with his wife Sonia.
His father Montu Khalifa filed a murder case against unidentified suspects at Fatullah Model Police Station on the night of the incident.
At a press briefing, SP Munshi said: “The investigation found evidence implicating Sonia and her lover, leading to their arrest. Other suspects were later detained based on their statements.”
Police believe the killing was premeditated.
He said a machete and a switch-gear knife were recovered based on information from the accused.
Sumon was unemployed, while his wife Sonia earned a living by singing at events. On the night of Nov 30, the couple went to a music programme in Panchabati, where Sumon left around 11pm.
Police said when Sumon discovered the affair, a dispute followed, and the suspects allegedly planned the murder.
SI Yasin said Mehedi admitted Sonia’s involvement during interrogation.
According to police, Mehedi picked up Sumon in an autorickshaw from the Panchabati area that night on the pretext of lending him money, took him to an abandoned location, and killed him with a sharp weapon.
All the arrested were sent to jail through the court at noon.
