A Dhaka court has granted four days for questioning the wife, brother-in-law, and a close friend of Faisal Karim Masud, the key suspect in the shooting death of Inqilab Moncho Convenor Sharif Osman bin Hadi.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Siddique Azad issued the order on Saturday, the day of Hadi’s funeral.
In the Paltan Police Station case, the court has also sent rent-a-car businessman Md Nuruzzaman Nomani, alias Ujjal, to jail.
Hadi, a potential candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency who rose to prominence during the July Uprising, was fatally shot at close range on Dec 12. He died on Dec 18 while undergoing treatment in Singapore.
He was buried next to the tomb of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam at Dhaka University on Saturday.
The investigating officer presented Faisal's wife Shaheda Parvin Samia, his brother-in-law Wahid Ahmed Shipu, and his close friend Maria Akhter Lima before the court after completing the first phase of questioning.
Samia and two others were remanded for five days on Dec 15. Nuruzzaman was remanded for three days on Dec 17.
Inspector Faisal Ahmed, the investigating officer of the case, sought seven more days to keep the three in custody to grill them while requesting that the other be sent to prison.
He said the remand was necessary for a fair investigation and identifying the perpetrators, including the financiers, instigators, and planners.
The other suspects arrested in the case are Faisal’s father Md Humayun Kabir, mother Hasi Begum, Faisal’s associates Md Kabir, Sibyoun Diu, and Sanjay Chisim, who helped him escape to India.
Faisal’s parents have given confessional statements in court.
Abdullah Al Jaber, member secretary of Inqilab Moncho, filed an attempt-to-murder case at Paltan Police Station on Dec 14 with the family’s consent in connection with the attack on Hadi.
Hadi was attacked in Bijoynagar. He was riding in an electric rickshaw when an assailant riding pillion on a motorcycle shot him in the head.
Gravely injured, Hadi was first taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. He was later shifted to Evercare Hospital.
He was flown to Singapore by air ambulance on Dec 15.
