Police in Sylhet’s Beanibazar have recovered the body of a young man suspected to have been killed over a phone-snatching incident.
The body, with the victim’s hands, feet and mouth tightly bound, was found around 7am on Wednesday at a fish market in Kona Shaleshwar village of Sheola Union, said Beanibazar Police chief Md Omar Faruk.
The victim, 22-year-old Imon Ahmad, was the son of Mutolib Mia from Khoshir Namnagar village. His remains were sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for postmortem.
Police also detained 23-year-old Ashraful, son of Abdul Karim Monair from Imon’s native village, on suspicion of involvement.
Officer Omar said Imon had been missing since Dec 7, with his family filing a missing person report the following day. Police began searching immediately before recovering his body on Wednesday morning.
According to him, Imon used an iPhone to create content and was well-liked locally for his gentle nature. Ashraful, he added, had a strong interest in the device, and initial findings suggested that Ashraful and his associates carried out the killing in an attempt to snatch the phone.
The family is preparing to file a case, the police official said.
