Five fishermen from Barguna have gone missing after their fishing trawler sank in the rough Bay of Bengal off Pathorghata.
The accident happened in the deep sea on Monday afternoon amid adverse weather, according to Golam Mostafa Chowdhury, president of the Bangladesh Trawler Owners’ Association.
A search has begun for the five missing fishermen from the sunken vessel “FB Barkat”.
The missing fishermen are from different areas of Pathorghata Upazila.
Thirteen fishermen had left three days earlier aboard the vessel for a deep-sea fishing trip, Golam Mostafa said.
After the trawler sank, fishermen on another Pathorghata fishing boat spotted parts of the vessel floating nearby and rescued eight men from the water.
The sunken trawler is owned by Ashraf Company of Pathorghata, he said.
The trawler owners’ association has sent another boat to search for the missing fishermen and recover the vessel.
Upazila administrator (UNO) Tapas Pal said three teams were involved in the search, including a large Coast Guard team from Pathorghata.
“The Upazila administration is making every effort to rescue them,” he added.
