Sixth worker dies after clashes with police at Banshkhali power plant

A worker of the under-construction power plant of S Alam Group in Chattogram’s Banshkhali has died from his bullet injuries, taking the death toll in the clashes on Apr 17 to six.

Shimul Ahmed Babu, 22, passed away at Chattogram Medical College Hospital on Wednesday afternoon, Banshkhali Police Station OC Shafiul Kabir said.

The worker from Moulvibazar was undergoing treatment at the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, said Shilbrata Barua, a sub-inspector at the hospital’s police camp.

The workers of the coal-fired plant clashed with the police during demonstration for various demands five days ago. Four people died in police firing at the plant. Another victim died in hospital care the same day.

At least 20 other workers and three policemen were also injured in the clashes. The police and the plant authorities started two cases over the incident.

Witnesses and injured workers said the clashes erupted during demonstration for back pay and a change of working hours during Ramadan.
