In a memorial speech during his Namaz-e-Janaza at the Chairmanbarhi Ground on Wednesday, his grandfather and Awami League leader Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim recalled how the 8-year-old kept members of the family in good humour all the time.

Zayan, a grade two student of Sunbeam school at Uttara, was fond of cricket and a fan of all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan.

He went to Sri Lanka to visit the island state on holiday with his family.

The boy was having breakfast with his father Moshiul Haque Chowdhary Prince at the restaurant of their hotel when a suicide attacker detonated a bomb.

Selim’s daughter Sheikh Amina Sultana Sonia and Zayan’s younger brother Zohan Chowdhary were in their hotel room.

Prince, critically injured in the attack, is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Sri Lanka now while Zayan’s body was flown back earlier on Wednesday.

“Please pray for the recovery of my son-in-law. Your sympathy has strengthened us,” Selim, a nephew of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, told the people at the funeral, recalling the Aug 15, 1975 massacre of Bangabandhu’s family.

“Please pray for my daughter so that she can bear the pain,” he added.

In the Aug 15 carnage, Selim also lost his brother Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni and Moni’s wife Arzu Moni.

Bangabandhu’s daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina went to Selim’s house at Banani in the afternoon to console her grieving relatives.

“Of the Aug 15 martyrs, only Bangabandhu was taken to Tungiparha. The 18 others were buried at Banani Graveyard. Zayan will be buried next to their graves as the 19th martyr,” said Selim, a ruling party MP and former minister.

The boy was buried later in the evening.
