The shootout took place in Sadar Upazila’s Nishchintapur neighbourhood early Tuesday, said Zahidul Islam, additional superintendent of police.

The man has been identified as 42-year-old Enamul Haque Ena.

“After detaining Enamul, police took him along on a raid to recover Phensedyl. His accomplices opened fire on police after they arrived at Batala intersection in Nishchintapur forcing them to retaliate. Enamul died on the spot after being shot,” Zahidul told bdnews24.com

Phensedyl and weapons were recovered from the scene.

Two police personnel were also wounded in the gunfight and received first aid.

Police did not explain why Enamul was arrested.

His wife Rafila Khatun claimed a group of people in plainclothes picked up Enamul from home two days ago and the family could not trace him since then.

Enamul was named in two murder cases, said Obaidur Rahman, chief of Meherpur DB police

“Enamul’s elder brother was also a notorious robber and died in a gunfight about seven years ago,” he said.
