Five confess to leaking fake question papers in first Digital Security Act case: Police

The five people arrested in the first Digital Security Act case have confessed to cheating medical college admission seekers by providing them with fake leaked question papers on the social media, police say.

Different judges of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrates Court of Dhaka recorded their confessional statements and ordered them into jail on Sunday.

Sub-Inspector Shibbir Ahmed of the police’s Criminal Investigation Department produced the five before the court after grilling them for two days in custody.

“All of them have admitted to the crimes they have committed,” SI Md Jalal Uddin of the court police said.  

Police arrested the five - Kawser Gazi, Sohel Mia, Tariqul Islam Shovon, Rubaiyat Tanvir Aditya, and Masudur Rahman Emon – in an operation in Jatrabarhi and Badda areas on Oct 10.

CID Special Superintendent of Police Molla Nazrul Islam said they were arrested in a case started at Paltan Police Station and it is the first case under the newly passed Act.

One of them is an agent of mobile banking service provider bKash while the others are students, police said.

They had collected money from different people through bKash promising them leaked question papers, which were fake, on Facebook during the medical college admission test earlier in October, according to the police.

They are also accused of leaking question papers of different competitive tests in the past.

They face up to five years’ prison term or maximum Tk 500,000 fines or both for cheating using digital or electronic devices, according to the new law.
