Crime suspect killed in shootout with RAB in Rangpur

A man who was accused in a series of cases has been killed in an alleged shootout with RAB in Rangpur.

The shootout took place in the neighbourhood of Rahmat Para in Radhakrishnapur area around 3am on Friday, said ASP Khandaker Golam Mortuza, assistant director of RAB-13 team.

The man has been identified as Shawkat Hossain Ghughu, 38.

Ghughu was a drug trader and named in 13 cases at Kotwali Police Station for drug trafficking, murder and other crimes, according to the RAB.

“A RAB team conducted an operation after receiving information about drug trafficking in Rahmat Para area. The drug dealers opened fire on the RAB personnel who later retaliated, leading to a gunfight,” Mortuza told bdnews24.com.

Ghughu died on the spot during the gunfight, he said.

A pistol, three bullets, a magazine, 25 bottles of Phensedyl and 6kg of marijuana were recovered from the scene, the RAB official said.

The body was taken to the Rangpur Medical College Hospital for autopsy, said Muktarul Alam, chief of Kotwali Police Station.
