The demonstrators alleged that Bangladesh Chhatra League activists carried out the attack as they did during the past demonstrations.

The protesters brought out a procession after a human-chain programme at the Central Shaheed Minar on Sunday afternoon.

They came under attack when the procession reached the Bangabandhu Tower.

Dr Md Tanzimuddin Khan, associate professor of international relations at the DU, was among the protesters who were assaulted.

The students, who surrounded their teachers to save them, were also attacked.

The female students took shelter in the Bangabandhu Tower and the nearby residential area.

The attackers launched another assault on the teachers when journalists went there seeking their comments. The journalists then calmed the attackers.

“Proctor Golam Rabbani is not paying attention to our call for security measures to protect the teachers and students,” said Fahmidul Haq, an associate professor who teaches communication and journalism at the DU.

The protesters moved away when a team headed by Proctor Kamrul Hasan and Sohel Rana came to the site and asked them to leave afterwards.

No-one came to assist the team, Rabbani alleged while speaking to bdnews24.com.

The university administration will take action against those who were involved in the incident.
