Man killed in Faridpur clash over market dispute

A man has been killed in a clash between two rivals group in Faridpur’s Sadarpur Upazila over the lease of a local market.

The clash occurred early on Monday at the upazila’s Krisnapur neighbourhood, said OC Mohammad Ali of Sadarpur Police Station.

The deceased was identified as Mannan Sikder, a resident of Radhanagar village in Krisnapur union.

Akhtaruzzaman Ilias, a supporter Faridpur-4 MP Mujibur Rahman Nixon Chowdhury, had a long-standing power struggle with Krisnapur union council chairman Billal Fakir over the area, said OC Ali citing the locals.

“Clashes ensued between the followers of the two leaders on Sunday afternoon over the leasing of Krisnapur market. At least 20 shops and adjacent houses were vandalised during the clash.”

Subsequently the two sides clashed again on Monday morning, leaving one dead.

Police have brought the situation under control, the OC said, adding that an investigation will be launched once a formal complaint is filed.
