State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam held a meeting with Guterres at the UN headquarters in New York on Friday.

“I am delighted that Bangladesh has fulfilled the criteria for graduation from the world’s least developed countries. This is a clear signal that the country is building an inclusive and thriving economy, with a commitment to lifting millions of people from poverty and hunger,” Guterres said in a statement.

Guterres also spoke high of Bangladesh’s achievements in women's empowerment and access to education.

Describing graduation as a “milestone”, Guterres said: “Strong vision, national leadership and sound policies and programmes will be crucial as Bangladesh strives to become a middle‑income country and implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

“The United Nations will continue to support Bangladesh in this journey,” Guterres said.

The UN chief also praised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her generosity towards the Rohingya refugees and cited UN’s determination to ensure safe repatriation of the refugees to their lands.

State Minister Alam urged Guterres to speed up the process of appointing a special envoy to look after Myanmar affairs.

Guterres thanked Alam for joining the launch of “the International Decade of Water for Sustainable Development 2018-2028”.

Alam also held a meeting with Vladimir Ivanovich Voronko, under-secretary-general of the United Nation’s Counter-Terrorism Office.

He thanked Vladimir for the continuous support from the UN’s Counter-Terrorism Office to Bangladesh to combat militancy.

To this, Vladimir lauded Bangladesh government’s initiatives on the issue and pledged further assistances.

The state minister discussed bi-lateral and multi-lateral subjects with Yashar Teymur oglu Aliyev, permanent representative of Azerbaijan to the United Nations, in another meeting.
