The fog began to gather around midnight on Monday and thickened as the night wore on, said BIWTA Shimulia Port Manager Gias Uddin Patwari.

Ferry service was halted around 2am on Tuesday due to the risk and six ferries were stuck on the route, he said.

“Ferry service resumed at 11am as the fog dispersed,” he added.

Though hundreds of vehicles had been stuck as a result of the delay, BIWTA officials say it should not take too long to ferry them across.

Several hundred vehicles are stuck waiting for service to resume, Patwari added.

Ferry service from Kathalbari resumed around 10:30am on Tuesday after the fog began to disperse, but were forced to anchor part-way due to the fog near the Shimulia port, said BIWTA Shimulia Port Assistant General Manager Khandker Shaha Newaz Khaled.

Ferry services resumed around 11am after the fog lifted, he said.

Winter fog often causes delays on the Shimulia-Kathalbari and Paturia-Daulatdia naval routes.
