Judge Abdur Rahman Sarder of Dhaka’s Fourth Speedy Trial Tribunal delivered the verdict on Tuesday.

The court handed death sentences to Md Masum, Al Amin alias Alam, Shafiqul Islam alias Robin, and Md Jahangir Hossain. All of them are absconding.

Md Babla and Monir Hossain have to serve life terms in prison. The court also fined them Tk 20,000 each. In default, they will have to suffer one year more in prison.

In 2009, following a conflict over possession of extorted money, the convicts killed their gang member Rana by slitting his throat and dumped his body in a village near Demra, as per details of the verdict.

Monir headed the group of extortionists in Jatrabari. Rana worked as his assistant.

The court had recorded statements of 11 persons in the case, said Abul Kalam Azad, a court official.
