Police arrest 47 more over attacks on Hindu homes in Rangpur

With 47 fresh arrests, a total of 100 people have now been detained and sent to jail in two cases of arson attacks on Hindu homes in Rangpur following an alleged blasphemous post on social media.

Rangpur Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman told bdnews24.com that the law enforcers made the new arrests on Sunday.

"Most of them are activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and (its student front) Islami Chhatra Shibir," he said.

The 100 people arrested in two days were produced before a court that sent them to jail pending trial, the SP said.

He also said a special police team has been tasked with apprehending the three identified as instigators of the attacks. Police arrested another accused of instigating the attacks on Saturday.

Thousands attacked the Hindu homes at Thakurparha in Khaleya union of Sadar Upazila on Friday afternoon after protesting against an alleged blasphemous Facebook post by a Hindu man. One of the protesters was killed in police firing.
