Walls collapse in Gazipur, killing woman, child amid heavy rains

A woman and a child have been killed in separate incidents of wall collapse in Gazipur amid heavy rains triggered by a low over the Bay of Bengal.

Two others were injured in the incidents in Pubail of Gazipur City Corporation and Kainjanul of Gazipur Sadar Upazila early Saturday.

The dead are Md Jahid Mia, 2, son of Sumon Mia from Kishoreganj, and Selina Akter, 30.  

Hosne Ara Siddiqua, a ward councillor, said the child died after a wall of an adjacent building collapsed on the tin-roofed house of his maternal grandfather.

Jahid’s mother Rina Akter and her sister Runa Akter were also injured.

Rina came to visit her parents with Jahid, Siddiqua said.

Md Shah Alam, a member of Mirzapur union council, said Selina, a garment factory worker, died after a wall of her rented house collapsed around 5am.

Shal Alam said he suspected heavy rains loosened the base of the wall leading it to collapse.
