Three die as train hits microbus in Comilla

Three microbus passengers were killed after their vehicle was struck by a train at an unprotected crossing in Comilla, police have said.

The accident occurred around 12pm on Tuesday in the Bijoypur Srinibash area of the Sadar South Upazila, said Lalmai Highway Outpost In-Charge Sgt Md Ibrahim.

One of the dead has been identified as 52-year-old retired army officer Abu Taher. He was a security officer at the Exim Bank Monohorpur branch. The other two victims have yet to be identified.

The inter-city Paharika Express from Chittagong struck the microbus, said Sgt Ibrahim. One victim died on the spot while two were grievously injured.

One died at Comilla Medical College Hospital while the other passed away at Comilla Sadar Hospital.

No railway workers have been assigned to monitor the crossing, said Laksam Railway In-charge Swapan Kanti Barua.

Comilla Sadar South Upazila Parishad Vice Chairman Abdul Hai Bablu said travellers use the crossing at their own discretion and the railway authority had not assigned anyone to the crossing.
