Moniruzzaman Shahin, aka 'Banduk Shahin', was involved with the BNP and had been accused of a number of crimes including murder, claimed the police on Friday.

The 50-year-old was killed during a shootout at Narayanganj's Galachipa Goalia Khal area, said Additional Police Superintendent Md Sharfuddin.

It followed after the police got a tip-off about Shahin's whereabouts, he said.

"A police team raided the area at dawn. They were shot at by Shahin's associates. The police fired back and Shahin died during the gun battle."

"Detective Branch OC Mahbubur Rahman and SI Mizan have been injured in the firing."

"Shahin had 12 cases lodged against him in various police stations for murder, extortion, drugs and several other offences."

The police recovered a foreign-made pistol and four rounds of ammunition from the site, he said.
