US embassy condoles landslide deaths

US Embassy Chargé D'affaires Joel Reifman has expressed condolences over the deaths in Tuesday’s landslides in the Chittagong, Rangamati and Bandarban districts.

Death toll rose to 133 on Wednesday as search for more bodies or those stranded continued.

“Your suffering affects us deeply,” Reifman said in a statement while expressing “heartfelt sympathy” on behalf of the entire staff of the embassy in Dhaka.

“We also applaud the bravery of the rescuers, those injured and those who in several cases paid the ultimate price to aid their fellow Bangladeshis,” he said.

The EU, Canada and the UK earlier expressed their condolences.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tweeted expressing his sadness. He also offered assistance if required.
