9 killed in storm in Bangladesh

At least nine people have been killed in a powerful storm that lashed the northern districts of Bangladesh.

The casualties occurred in Bogra, Rajshahi, Pabna and Naogaon due to collapse of roofs and walls, landslide and lightning strike on Saturday.    
 
Standing paddy crops and mangoes in the northern districts were also damaged in the storm.
 
Many were injured after trees fell on them.
 
Power connection in several areas across Bangladesh snapped due to the storm.
 
Bogra Additional Police Superintendent Arifur Rahman said Ajiran Bibi, 38, and six-month-old ‘Mila’ died when a wall collapsed on them at Sadar Upazila.
 
Lutfar Rahman, 28, of Shahjahanpur Upazila died in a similar accident.
 
Over 50 people were injured when walls collapsed and trees fell during the storm in the district. They have been admitted to local hospitals.
 
In Rajshahi, Jahanara Begum, 60, died when a wall collapsed at Bagha.
 
Bagha Police Station OC Aminur Rahman said one “Imajuddin’, 47, also died when the land adjacent to a river was washed away.
 
Manwara Bewa, 65, died after the roof of corrugated tins collapsed, Godagarhi Police Station OC SM Abu Farhad said.
 
Paba Uazila Nirbahee Officer Kaisarul Islam said ‘Hakim’ died after being hit by a lightning.
 
At Manda in Naogaon, Shahnaz Parveen, 35, died when a wall collapsed.
 
Manda Police Station OC Mozaffar Hossain said over 50 were injured in the storm. Of them, 11 were taken to the local health complex.
 
Tea-stall owner Jamuddin Baksh of Pabna’s Chandmari died when a tree fell on his shop, Sadar Police Station SI Tariqul Islam said.
