The appeal calls for the maximum penalty (death) for Azam for his involvement with crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.

The Tribunal had said in its judgement on July 15 that Azam deserved death penalty for the crimes he committed.

But his age and failing health were considered while handing out the final verdict that ensures he will die in jail.

Additional Attorney General MK Rahman, who leads the tribunal’s prosecution team, filed the appeal on Monday.

The former Jamaat chief has already appealed against the prison sentence on Aug 5, seeking to be let off unconditionally.
