Tigers to beautify Chittagong

Ten sculptures of Tigers will be added to the port city for its beautification ahead of the Twenty20 World Cup.

Chittagong City Corporation made the decision after the sculpture of a tiger was vandalised in the city.

Three of these sculptures were placed ahead on the 2011 World Cup and one among them was partly smashed by miscreants.

City Corporation Executive Engineer (planning) Monirul Huda told bdnews24.com eight deer statues will also be erected.

An establishment called ‘Bioscope’ will has won the tender to make these structures at a cost of Tk 10 million.

The 18 new animal structures will line the two sides of the road from Ispahani Mor to Tiger Pass, according to the plans.
Huda said four companies had taken part in the tender process. Bioscope was selected after an overall analysis including prior experience.
The work to construct these structures will begin once the design the company submits is approved by CCC experts.
Mayor Mohammad Manjur Alam told bdnews24.com they took some initiatives for the city’s beautification. The sculptures of tigers and deers are a part of that move.
There is also a plan to build structures which will act as symbols of Chittagong’s culture and heritage, he said.
‘Worries for security of tigers’
City Corporation officials are worried after a large tiger sculpture at Tiger Pass was partly smashed.
CCC Urban Planner Md Rezaul Karim said, “These are attractive to the residents of the city and entertaining for children. We are a bit concerned now that one of the sculptures was vandalised.”
Those who are responsible for the act is yet to identified.
However, the two more sculptures of tigers under Batali Hill are unharmed.
