A Dhaka court on Tuesday granted police a week's remand of Emdadul Haque, the seventh accused to have been arrested earlier in the day for his alleged involvement in the killing of Biswajit Das.

The court of Metropolitan Magistrate Tanvir Ahmed granted the remand following a request by Inspector Tajul Islam of the Detective Police, who sought to question Haque for 10 days in their custody.

According to the remand prayer, Emdadul Haque needed to be taken into 10-day police custody for further grilling over the killing of Biswajit Das, who else were involved in the killing, their whereabouts and information leading to recovery of Ramda-Chapati, the homemade sharp weapon used in the killing.

Haque, identified from photos and video footage of the murder, was arrested from a rest house 'Shwapnopuri' in Chapainawabganj in the early hours of Tuesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police Deputy Commissioner Monirul Islam told bdnews24.com.

Biswajit, who ran a tailoring shop, was hacked to death on Dec 9 near the Victoria Park in Old Dhaka during the 18-Party Alliance-enforced countrywide road blockade programme.

The attackers were identified by media as activists of the Jagannath University unit of the ruling Awami League's student front, Bangladesh Chhatra League.

On Dec 12, the Jagannath University authorities cancelled certificates of Emdadul and Mahfuzur Rahman Nahid for their alleged link with the murder. The authorities expelled three other students over the killing the same day, followed by expulsion of four more later.

Speaking to the media, the DB spokesperson had said Emdadul was about to flee to India through the Chapainawabganj border.

Son of one Akram Ali, Haque hails from Panchkaiba of Sharsha in Jessore.

He completed his graduation in Philosophy from the university in 2011.

Six others have already been arrested in the case.

Rafiqul Islam Shakil, GM Rasheduzzaman Shaon and Mahfuzur Rahman Nahid confessed their crime before a Dhaka court on Dec 23.

Police are currently grilling HM Kibria, Qaiyum Mia Tipu and Saiful Islam in custody.
