Mahmudur jailed for contempt of court

Dhaka, Aug 19 (bdnews24.com) – The Supreme Court finding Mahmudur Rahman, the acting editor of the Bengali-language daily Amar Desh, guilty of contempt of court has jailed him for six months.
The full bench of the Appellate Division, headed by chief justice Mohammad Fazlul Karim, on Thursday also fined him Tk 0.1 million with an extra month in prison if he fails to pay the fine.
The court also sentenced the daily newspaper's correspondent Oliullah Noman to one month in prison and fined Tk 10,000. He will have to serve an extra seven days in prison on failure to pay the fine.
The daily's publisher Hashmat Ali has been fined Tk 10,000.
The court unconditionally released the daily's news editor Mostahid Faruqi and deputy editor Syed Abdal Ahmed, relieving them of the charge.
Attorney general Mahbubey Alam told journalists: "No one will dare to spoil the image of the justice department after this verdict."
He also pointed out that the Appellate Division handed down the punishment in a contempt court case for the first time in its history.
Additional attorney general M K Rahman told journalists that the punishment will be enforced after a copy of the verdict reaches the jail.
On Wednesday, the court had adjourned hearing.
On Apr 21, a report by Rahman headlined 'Chambers always give stay order for the state,' (Chamber Manei Sarkar'r Pakkhe Stay) was published in the daily.
On June 2, Supreme Court lawyers Riazuddin Khan and Kazi Moinul Islam had petitioned the court to bring contempt charges against them.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Appellate Division issued yet another court contempt ruling against Rahman and the publisher for another article published in the daily newspaper on May 10, headlined 'Farce in the name of independent justice' (Swadhin Bichharer Name Tamasha).
It asked Rahman and Ali to appear before the court on Aug 24 and explain why such charges should not be filed against them.
Lawyers Riazuddin Khan and Kazi Moinul Hasan were also behind the filing of Monday's contempt of court charge.
