Dhaka, October 20 (bdnews24.com) - Prof M Lutfor Rahman of Dhaka University has been appointed first vice chancellor of newly established Rangpur University, to open its doors on Wednesday, education ministry officials said Monday.
"Prof Rahman of the (DU) department of computer science and engineering was appointed today, and he came to the ministry to officially accept the post," senior information officer of the education ministry Subodh Chandra Dhali told bdnews24.com.
Education adviser Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman is expected to formally inaugurate the new university on Oct 22. The university is due to start its academic activities from the current session.
Prof Rahman, who hails from the Rangpur district, said he would take over the charge on Tuesday.
The government had previously considered the possibility of transforming Rangpur's existing Carmichael College into a full-fledged university, but considering the northern region's development needs the advisory council decided to establish the new university.
The cabinet approved the Rangpur University Ordinance 2008 on June 15.
