Alliance candidate wins Sunamganj bypolls

Ruling four-party candidate Alhaj M Shahinur Pasha Chowdhury was announced winner in the Sunamganj-3 by-election.
Dhaka, July 21 (BDNEWS) – Ruling four-party candidate Alhaj M Shahinur Pasha Chowdhury was announced winner in the Sunamganj-3 by-election.
Unofficial results reached the Election Commission showed Pasha polled 42,944 votes while his nearest rival independent candidate MA Mannan, a former additional secretary of the Election Commission Secretariat, 38,879 votes.
Lt Col (retd) Syed Ali Ahmed of Jatiya Party bagged 21,012 votes while another independent candidate M Nazrul Islam and 20,814 votes.
Interestingly, the EC received results of 54 centres, out of 127, by 10:05pm Wednesday in six phases. But since then it did not receive any result from Sunamganj for a long time.
After that it received the result of 103 centres at 12:05am Thursday.
The final result of all the 127 centres reached the EC at 1:00 pm.
The constituency fell vacant following the death of former Foreign Minister and veteran Awami League leader Abdus Samad Azad.
