The High Court has granted bail to Chinmoy Krishna Das in two separate cases involving allegations of vandalism, assault and obstructing government duties.
The spokesperson for Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagaran Jote, however, will not be released yet as several other cases against him remain pending.
A High Court bench of Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher issued the order on Sunday, making absolute the rules previously issued on his bail pleas.
Lawyer Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee represented Chinmoy, while Deputy Attorney General Syeda Shajia Sharmin appeared for the state.
After the hearing, Apurba told bdnews24.com: “Chinmoy faces a total of six criminal cases. The trial in the murder case of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif in Chattogram is under way before a tribunal.
“The High Court had granted him bail in the sedition case, but that order has been stayed. Of the remaining four cases, the High Court granted him bail in two on Sunday.”
“Five of the six cases are currently pending before the higher courts and one before a lower court. Four of the five before the High Court are being heard by the same bench.
Bail has now been granted in two of those four, while hearings on the other two are scheduled for Aug 16, he added.
Chinmoy was first arrested in a sedition case filed over alleged disrespect to Bangladesh's national flag.
He was arrested in Dhaka on Nov 25, 2024, after the case was filed in Chattogram.
The following day, a court denied him bail. During clashes between his supporters and law enforcers near the court, lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was beaten and hacked to death.
Alif's father later filed a murder case naming 31 people.
Chinmoy was subsequently shown arrested in that case and several others involving alleged attacks, obstruction of official duties and cocktail explosions.
