A case has been filed against small-screen actor Zaher Alvi following the discovery of his wife’s body hanging in their Mirpur residence.

The case, lodged under allegations of “abetting suicide”, also names Alvi’s mother, Nasrin Sultana Shiuli, and his alleged girlfriend Iffat Ara Tithi as suspects, according to Pallabi Police chief AKM Alamgir Jahan.

The body of Alvi’s wife, Afra Ibnat Ikra, was recovered on Saturday afternoon from their home in Mirpur DOHS.

Alvi has described his wife’s death as a suicide.

While filming abroad, he posted on Facebook confirming that Ikra had taken her own life.

That same evening, a complaint was filed at Pallabi Police Station by Ikra’s uncle Sheikh Tanvir Ahmed, accusing Alvi of “abetting” her suicide.

The complaint alleges that prolonged “family disputes and different forms of abuse” forced Ikra to end her life.

Police said Ikra was found around 11:45am on Saturday, hanging from a ceiling fan by her scarf.

Relatives discovered her and rushed her to Kurmitola Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Officers later visited the hospital and the residence to record an inquest report and collect evidence.

In his Facebook post, Alvi wrote: “Today at noon, my wife Ikra committed suicide at our Mirpur DOHS home. I was in Nepal for a shoot. Since hearing the news, I am not in a state to speak. I cannot understand why she left us, without thinking of our child or me.”

Alvi and Ikra were married in 2010 and had one son.
