A man has been shot dead in Cox's Bazar's Chakaria Upazila.

The fatal shooting occurred around 11:30pm on Friday near Azamnagar School in Badarkhali, according to Chakaria Police Station chief Shafiqul Islam.

The dead man has been identified as Mohammad Suhayet, 35, a local resident.

Citing witnesses, local Union Parishad (council) member Md Rubel said the shot was fired from a speeding autorickshaw. Suhayet collapsed when the bullet struck him in the neck and he died on the spot.

Suhayet had been sentenced to life in prison for the 2016 murder of his uncle, Nurul Huda, who was the president of the Badarkhali Union unit of the Awami League. The verdict was delivered by the Chattogram Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal on Mar 6, 2022. Later, on Mar 24 that year, RAB-7 arrested him in Chakaria while he was in hiding.

When asked about the current status of the case and how or when Suhayet was released from prison, Shafiqul said he would be able to provide more details later.

Police completed the inquest report on his death around 1am. The body was then sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for an autopsy, according to Shafiqul.
