Home Minister Salahuddin signals zero tolerance for ‘mob culture’

He warns against road blockades, and calls for people-friendly police

Bangladesh’s new Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has warned that “mob culture” will no longer be tolerated, stressing that demands must be raised through lawful processes rather than blocking highways.

Speaking after a meeting with officials at the Secretariat on Wednesday, Salahuddin said “mob culture is over” in Bangladesh.

“It will not be encouraged in any way. People may hold rallies and programmes as part of democratic practice, but highways cannot be blocked to realise demands.”

He urged police to rebuild public trust, saying the force must become “a friend of the people” and overcome its damaged image.

The minister also pledged to keep his ministry free of corruption.

“It must be a totally corruption‑free ministry, with accountability and transparency. Anyone in the force found involved in crime will face immediate investigation and action,” he said.
