BNP leaders and activists are marching in small processions to the Chattogram’s Polo Ground to see their party chief.

A festive atmosphere has developed around Sunday’s election rally at the venue.

Party activists began gathering in the area since the early morning, and the crowd continued to swell as the day rolled on, gradually filling the Polo Ground.

People are joining the rally in processions from different wards and Upazilas of Chattogram, as well as from Cox’s Bazar and the three hill districts, carrying banners and festoons and wearing colourful outfits.

The formal proceedings of the rally began at 10:30am, with Chattogram Metropolitan BNP Convener Ershad Ullah presiding and Member Secretary Nazimur Rahman moderating the event. Party leaders said BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman is expected to arrive at the Polo Ground rally at 11:30am.

After spending more than a decade and a half in exile in the United Kingdom, Tarique returned to the country on Dec 25. Delivering a speech on Bangladeshi soil that day, he said: “I have a plan.”

Exactly a month after his return, he is set to join the BNP’s grand rally at Chattogram’s Polo Ground. Local BNP leaders hope that their party chief will share that ‘plan’ with the people of Chattogram.

Tarique last addressed a public rally in Chattogram on May 6, 2005, at Laldighi Maidan, when he was the party’s senior joint secretary general. This time, he is visiting Chattogram as the BNP chairman.

He is scheduled to address the rally at the Polo Ground at 11am on Jan 25. Earlier, on Jan 9, 2012, his mother and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia had addressed a public rally at the city’s largest field.

After the Chattogram rally, Tarique will address election rallies at Feni Pilot School ground at 4pm, Chauddagram High School ground in Cumilla at 5:30pm, Digbaji ground in Suwagazi at 7pm, Daudkandi Eidgah ground at 7:30pm, and Kanchpur Balurmath at 11:30pm.
