The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast increased rainfall in the southern regions of the country due to the formation of a low-pressure system over Gangetic West Bengal and surrounding areas.

“Rain is already occurring, and it will increase under the influence of the low-pressure system. However, the heavy rainfall is expected to subside after 24 hours,” Meteorologist Hafizur Rahman said.

In a weather alert, the Met Office warned of heavy rainfall in three southern divisions.

Due to the activity of the southwest monsoon, heavy to very heavy rainfall may occur in parts of the Chattogram, Khulna, and Barishal divisions in the 24 hours from 10am on Monday, it said.

It also warned that due to very heavy rainfall, there is a risk of landslides in hilly areas of the Chattogram Division. Additionally, temporary waterlogging may occur in parts of Chattogram city.

The BMD classifies rainfall exceeding 88mm over a period of 24 hours as very heavy, while 44-88mm is heavy, 23-43mm moderately heavy, 11-22mm moderate, and 1-10mm light.

Meanwhile, all four maritime ports of the country have been advised to hoist Local Cautionary Signal No. 3 from Thursday.
