A court has sentenced three people to death over two separate murders in Chuadanga’s Alamdanga and Jibannagar Upazilas.

District and Sessions Judge Md Akbar Ali Sheikh delivered the verdicts separately in the presence of the accused on Wednesday, according to Public Prosecutor Maruf Sarowar.

Those sentenced are Swadhin Ali, 34, from Bamangar village in Alamdanga, Ashiqur Rahman Ashiq alias Badsha, 24, from Farmpara in Chuadanga town, and in the other case, Jamir Uddin, 45, from Jibannagar Upazila.

PP Maruf said that on Jun 16, 2022, Jamir Uddin hacked Babul Rahman from Jibannagar’s Gangadaspur village to death with a spade over a prior dispute.

Babul’s wife, Chaina Khatun, filed a murder case with Jibannagar Police Station following the incident, naming Jamir as the sole suspect.

After recording statements from 20 witnesses, the court sentenced him to death and fined him Tk 10,000, Maruf said.

In the other case, the state counsel said Swadhin and Ashiq lured Kamal Hossain from Alamdanga’s Jehala village out of his home on the night of May 9, 2022, over a land dispute. They later hacked Kamal to death by the roadside.

The victim’s wife, Selina Akter, filed a murder case with Alamdanga Police Station the next day. After examining testimonies from 26 witnesses, the court sentenced the two to death and fined them Tk 10,000 each, he added.

After the verdict, police took the convicts to prison under tight security.
