A 10-year-old boy was unwilling to go to a madrasa. But, on Sunday night, his family forcibly took him to the institution and left him there. Soon afterwards, the child died after falling off the roof of the building.
The deceased child was identified as Yamin, who fell from the roof of the four-storey Tasfilul Quran, a Hafezi madrasa in Dhaka’s West Jurain, around 9:30pm on Sunday. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where doctors pronounced him dead.
However, the madrasa authorities could not confirm how he fell from the roof.
Madrasa Principal Ferdous Ahmed said Yamin was a student in the madrasa's Hifz section. He lived in the Mohammadbagh area of Kadamtali, and his father's name was Rafiqul Islam. Yamin had gone home after the madrasa closed for the holidays on Wednesday and had not returned since.
He said, “As Yamin did not want to return to the madrasa, his father called me and asked me to persuade him and bring him there from home. However, I did not go to bring Yamin back. Finally, around 9:30pm on Sunday, Yamin's maternal grandmother brought him to the madrasa.
“A short while later, I saw Yamin standing in the stairwell on the fourth floor and talking with some other students. I then told him to go downstairs for dinner and left. Sometime later, I was informed that he had fallen from the roof of the fourth floor of the madrasa. We immediately rescued him from beneath the building in critical condition and took him to the hospital.”
Inspector Mohammad Faruk, chief of the police camp at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said the child's body had been kept in the hospital morgue and Kadamtali Police Station had been informed of the matter.
However, speaking around 1:45pm on Monday, Kadamtali Police Station chief Sheikh Ashrafuzzaman said: “No one has filed a complaint with us. However, we heard that a child was injured after falling from a madrasa. We are looking into the matter.”
