A cold wave is sweeping across large parts of Bangladesh, dragging nighttime temperatures down to 8.3°C in Tetulia, one of the lowest readings this season.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said the cold conditions are expected to continue through Sunday, with fog likely in several regions, particularly during the early morning hours.

The cold spell has gripped the Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions, as well as the districts of Jashore, Chuadanga, and Kushtia, the BMD said in its latest update.

A mild cold wave occurs when the night temperature drops to 10°C to 8°C. A moderate cold wave is when the temperature stays between 8°C and 6°C. A severe cold wave comprises the temperature falling below 6°C.

A cold wave requires the temperature to prevail over a large area. Low temperature at a single station does not constitute a cold wave.

The lowest night temperature in the 24 hours until 9am on Thursday was recorded at 8.3°C at Tetulia. The highest day temperature was 28.5°C, recorded at Sreemangal.

In Dhaka, the lowest night temperature was 12.4°C, while the highest day temperature was Tk 24.5°C.

A depression in the Bay of Bengal is crossing over the Sri Lanka coast on Saturday evening, the BMD said. The system will have no significant impacts on the country except for making the skies a little bit cloudy.

The temperatures are likely to increase from Monday.

The weather forecast for the next five days says that the weather across the country may remain dry with temporarily partly cloudy skies from Saturday to Wednesday. There may be moderate to thick fog across the country from midnight to the morning over the five days. In some places, the foggy hours might extend into afternoons.

The BMD says the night and day temperatures across the country may fall on Sunday, while the day temperature may remain nearly unchanged on Monday. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the night temperatures may remain unchanged, but the day temperatures might fall.
