Nearly 25 years after his death, renowned writer and public intellectual Ahmed Sofa has found a new resting place at the Martyred Intellectuals Graveyard in Mirpur.
The relocation was completed on Wednesday afternoon under the supervision of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
DNCC Social Welfare Officer Goutam Kumar Biswas told bdnews24.com that the transfer of Ahmed Sofa's remains to the Martyred Intellectuals Cemetery was completed on Wednesday.
In response to a question from the correspondent, he said the process began around 11am.
"There was a slight delay due to rain. The work was completed between approximately 12:30pm and 12:45pm," Biswas said.
The DNCC had earlier decided to relocate Sofa's grave.
According to DNCC sources, the process began after the writer's nephew, Nurul Anwar, applied on the family's behalf on Jan 11 to have his remains moved from Mirpur General Cemetery to the Martyred Intellectuals Graveyard.
The application said Sofa had made significant contributions to Bangladesh's literature, arts, politics and social welfare, yet never received the recognition he deserved. It said relocating his remains to the Martyred Intellectuals Graveyard would honour his legacy.
Following the application, the matter was discussed at a meeting of the DNCC Corporation on Apr 13, where the proposal was unanimously approved.
The corporation's Social Welfare Department subsequently initiated the process of relocating the grave.
Ahmed Sofa died on Jul 28, 2001.
