Four fresh graves in a Lakshmipur village have become the silent, heart-wrenching testament to a family wiped out in an instant.
A madrasa teacher, his wife, and two children were buried on Friday after a devastating highway collision in Cumilla cut short their journey back to the capital following the Eid holidays.
The burials took place at the family graveyard of the victims' in-laws following a funeral prayer after the Jummah prayers.
The service, held at the Boshahaji Patwari Bari Jame Mosque premises, was led by Faisal Ahmad, the central organising secretary of Khelafat Majlis and the brother-in-law of the dead madrassa teacher.
The victims were identified as Mufti Abdul Momin, 52, a teacher at a madrasa in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur; his wife Jharna Begum, 40; their daughter Labiba, 18; and son Saif, 7.
The tragic accident occurred around 6pm on Thursday on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Kalakachua of Cumilla’s Burichang Upazila. Their private car was rammed by a bus, killing five occupants, including the driver, Jamal Hossain, 52.
Miraculously, Momin’s 14-year-old son, Abrar, survived the wreckage.
Momin, originally from Senbagh in Noakhali, did not own a home in his paternal village and typically spent his Eid holidays at his father-in-law’s house in Lakshmipur.
Relatives noted that while he lived in Dhaka for his profession, he had been planning to purchase land in his home village to build a permanent residence.
