Three suspicious objects have been found hanging from high-voltage power lines at three important locations in Meherpur city, causing alarm among residents.
Meherpur Sadar Police chief Humayun Kabir said the recovered objects were being placed in water-filled buckets and taken to the police station.
The first object was spotted early Saturday by locals, hanging from an electrical wire outside the Meherpur University building. Police went to the scene after being alerted and recovered it.
Another object of the same type was subsequently found hanging in a similar manner in the Court Mor area of the city and was also recovered.
A third object was later found hanging from an electrical wire in front of Sonali Bank in Sonali Bank area, a central point in the city.
Following the incidents, law enforcement activity has been increased at important locations across the city.
The discovery of similar bomb-like objects in the heart of the city on the same morning has raised questions among residents about how they were placed on electrical wires without being noticed by police or the market association's night patrol team.
Residents said it would be difficult to hang such objects from high-voltage electrical wires without proper training and choosing a safe time to do so.
Police, however, have not yet confirmed that the objects are explosive or even bomb-like devices.
Police official Humayun said the objects initially appeared to resemble sound boxes used in battery-powered autorickshaws.
However, he said their actual nature and whether they contain any explosive material would only be known after examination and testing.
The objects are currently being taken to Meherpur Sadar Police Station in water-filled buckets as police investigate the matter.
The incidents have prompted increased security and monitoring around key locations in the city while authorities work to determine what the objects are and how they came to be hanging from the electrical wires.
