A court in Meherpur has sentenced a 24-year-old man to death for raping a 9-year-old child, delivering the verdict within just 29 working days of the trial.

Judge Md Tajul Islam of the Meherpur Child Violence Suppression Tribunal pronounced the judgment on Sunday in the presence of the convict, confirmed Public Prosecutor (PP) Mustafizur Rahman Tuhin.

The swift verdict comes amid simmering public outrage over lengthy trials in child abuse cases, particularly following the “rape” and “brutal murder” of Pallabi child Ramisa Akter.

The death row convict Shakil Hossain, 24, is a resident of a village in Gangni Upazila.

According to the prosecution, the case dates back to Jun 16, 2025.

The victim was on her way to bring her farmer father lunch when she was intercepted by Shakil.

Shakil raped her after threatening to kill her with a cleaver.

When locals rushed to the spot after hearing the child’s screams, Shakil fled.

An aggrieved mob later surrounded Shakil's house, caught him, and beat him up before handing him over to the police.

That night, the child's father brought charges against Shakil as the sole suspect, and 12 witnesses testified both in-person and virtually during the trial.

Public Prosecutor Mustafizur Rahman Tuhin said the judge handed down the death sentence and fined the suspect Tk 300,000, failing which he would have to serve an additional year in prison.

"The court also ordered that the fine money, if necessary, be raised by auctioning off the rapist’s movable and immovable properties and handed over to the victim’s family through the court."
