Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has expressed deep sorrow and concern over the deaths of six Bangladeshi peacekeepers in an attack on a United Nations peacekeeping base in Sudan’s Abyei region.
After receiving the information on Saturday night, Yunus said Bangladesh had already urged the United Nations to take urgent steps to ensure the highest possible medical treatment and all necessary support for the injured peacekeepers.
He added that the government would stand beside the families of the peacekeepers during this difficult time.
The government said in a statement from the Chief Advisor’s Office that it would remain in close contact with the United Nations to ensure the swift repatriation of the bodies of the fallen soldiers and proper medical care for those wounded in the attack.
“I am deeply shocked by the martyrdom of six of our brave peacekeepers and the injury of eight others while they were carrying out the noble duty of establishing peace and stability,” Yunus said.

He noted that Bangladesh’s substantial contribution to UN peacekeeping missions is internationally recognised, adding that the sacrifice of the fallen soldiers is both a source of national pride and profound grief.
Yunus prayed for the eternal peace of the peacekeepers who died, offered his heartfelt condolences to their bereaved families, and wished the injured personnel a speedy recovery.
Condemning the attack, the statement said assaults on peacekeepers constitute a grave crime against international peace and humanity.
Yunus called on the UN and the international community to take effective measures to strengthen the security of peacekeeping forces.
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman also expressed condolences.
“I am deeply saddened and heartbroken by the news,” he said in a post on his official Facebook page.
“Our brave soldiers, who gave their lives while serving under the UN flag to protect world peace, are a source of great pride for our nation. Their sacrifice will always be remembered by Bangladesh. I pray for the forgiveness of the souls of the fallen peacekeepers and express my deepest sympathy to their grieving families.”
“I wish a speedy recovery to the injured soldiers and call on all concerned to stand by them during this difficult time.
“As the son of a decorated Army officer, I have always been passionately inspired by the exceptional professionalism, courage, and sacrifice of the Bangladesh Army,” he added.
He believes the international community must take stronger and more effective steps to ensure the safety of peacekeepers.
