A 5-year-old child has been killed after an iron pipe fell during piling work at a building under construction in Fatullah of Narayanganj.
The incident occurred on Friday morning in South Shastapur, Fatullah Model Police Station chief Abdul Mannan said.
The child, Muntasir Islam Hamza, son of Md Rubel from Rajnagar of Baktaboli Union, was also known by the nickname Yasin.
His father sells fried snacks in nearby districts and lives with his wife and three children, police said.
According to officer Mannan, piling work was under way at the construction site and the work was nearing completion. As the child was passing through the area, an iron pipe fell and left him seriously injured.
Family members rushed the child to Narayanganj 300-Bed Hospital, but the duty doctor said he had already died.
Speaking to journalists, the child’s father Rubel said he had been in Cumilla for work and returned after hearing about his son’s death.
He said he was offered a proposal to “settle the matter” in exchange for money.
Rubel alleged that Siddikur Rahman Uzzal, district weavers’ association organiser, mediated between the family and the contractor at a local mosque and discussed the compensation.
“Uzzal sat with the contractor at the mosque. Other locals were present. They demanded Tk 300,000. What can I do with money? My son won’t come back.”
Uzzal, who lives near the victim’s family, said over the phone that the family is poor and the child cannot be brought back, so the contractor offered money.
Officer Mannan said piling work had been carried out without proper safety measures and there was negligence on the part of both the contractor and the building owner.
He said police have not heard about any attempt at a settlement or compensation offer.
The family, however, do not want a postmortem on the body. Police will take action if the family file a complaint.
