The government has appointed former secretary Md Aminul Islam as the managing director of Dhaka WASA.

A notification issued by the public administration ministry on Tuesday said Aminul will serve as the Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority’s managing director on a one-year contractual basis.

The appointment comes after Dhaka WASA’s previous managing director Abdus Salam resigned on Sunday following allegations of money laundering and purchasing assets abroad.

On Monday, the Local Government Division gave Additional Secretary Mohammad Moniruzzaman temporary charge as the organisation’s managing director.

Aminul was appointed to the position the following day.

An officer of the 1985 BCS batch, Aminul Islam once served as a joint secretary at the shipping ministry. Much of his career, however, was spent at the National River Conservation Commission.

He also served earlier as the deputy commissioner of Cox’s Bazar.

Aminul had retired while serving as a joint secretary.

After the Awami League government’s fall, he was given retrospective promotions by the interim government, first to additional secretary and later to secretary.

Speaking to bdnews24.com, Aminul said: “I had long been deprived of promotions. The interim government first promoted me from joint secretary to additional secretary and then to secretary.”

A law graduate of the University of Dhaka, Aminul hails from Kuptola in Gaibandha Sadar Upazila.

In 2005, he was honoured as the best officer at the national level by then prime minister Khaleda Zia.
