Police have claimed to have solved the mystery behind the murder of a mother and daughter in Chattogram’s Anwara, saying that a relative killed them in an attempt to seize a sworn affidavit document and avoid repaying a debt.
According to police, the suspect had borrowed Tk 117,000 from the victims’ family to purchase an auto-rickshaw.
At a press briefing on Monday, Police Superintendent Md Masud Alam shared the information.
On Saturday night, Sujan Barua's wife Annie Barua, 40, and their daughter Priyanti Barua, 16, were killed at their own home in Chenamati Barua Para of Ward No. 6 of Paroikora Union.
Police arrested Sujan's cousin Tejpriyo Barua on Sunday night in connection with the incident.
SP Masud said, “Teju has confessed that he alone was involved in the incident. He had a financial transaction with Sujan Barua. He borrowed Tk 117,000 from Sujan to buy an auto-rickshaw on the condition that he would repay the money in monthly installments with interest.”
“A written stamp paper (affidavit document) was prepared for this arrangement and was kept by Sujan. Because of this document, Teju had to make payments every month. However, he could not pay regularly, which led to disputes and a deterioration in their relationship.
“At that point, Teju began planning how to avoid repaying the money. He thought that if he could somehow get hold of the document, he might no longer have to pay the debt, or he could claim that he had already repaid it if Sujan demanded the money.”
Describing the incident, the police superintendent said: “Teju went to the back of Sujan’s house, where there is a door, and waited there around 10:30pm on Saturday.”
“Around 10:45pm, Annie opened the door and was about to go outside. Tejpriyo immediately grabbed her. When she screamed, he stabbed her repeatedly. Hearing her mother’s screams, Priyonti ran toward the scene, and Teju also stabbed her. He then took Annie’s mobile phone and fled.”
While escaping, Teju allegedly threw the knife into nearby bushes behind Sujan’s house. Police later recovered the weapon.
SP Masud said Teju was arrested in Patiya on Sunday night.
