A driver’s assistant has been killed as a brick-laden three-wheeler overturned into a roadside ditch in Jhalakathi’s Rajapur.
The incident occurred near the Galua Bazar area on the Rajapur-Bhandaria highway around 9am on Sunday, according to Sujan Biswas, chief of Rajapur Police Station.
The dead man has been identified as 18-year-old Tanvir Islam, who hailed from Jhalakathi’s Sadar Upazila.
The three-wheeler was headed to Bhandaria when a tyre burst and the vehicle veered out of the driver’s control, witnesses said. It then fell into the roadside ditch.
Tanvir was caught underneath the bricks and critically injured. The driver, Shakil, fled the scene.
Another three-wheeler driver named Sabbir rallied locals to rescue Tanvir and, with support from the Fire Service, rushed him to the Rajapur Upazila Health Complex. There, the doctor conducted tests before declaring him dead.
Officer Sujon said police went to inspect the scene when the incident was reported. Legal action is being prepared over the incident.
