Four killed after pickup veers out of control and overturns in Rangamati

Four people have been killed after a pickup truck veered out of control and overturned in Rangamati Sadar Upazila.

The accident occurred at Manikchari in the Upazila around 5:30am, Rangamati Kotwali Police chief Md Jasim Uddin said.

The dead were identified as Meghrani Chakma, 45, of Krishnama Chhara in Naniarchar Upazila; Shobha Chakma, 52, of Ghilaichhari Union in the same Upazila; Shantana Chakma, 38, of Amanatbagh in Rangamati town; and Shanti Ranjan Chakma, 65, of Bijoy Nagar.

The injured were pickup driver Gyan Bikash Chakma, 50, and Sumon Chakma, 45. Both are receiving treatment at Rangamati General Hospital.

Police, quoting local residents, said several traders were travelling by pickup with goods to the market at Kutukchhari on Sunday. The pickup veered out of control at Manikchari, hit a roadside safety post and overturned.

Three people died at the scene. The injured were rescued and taken to Rangamati General Hospital.

Doctors at the hospital's emergency department said three bodies were brought to the hospital. The two injured people remained under treatment there, while another person was referred to Chattogram for treatment.

The person who was referred to Chattogram died on the way, Jasim Uddin said.

The officer said the bodies of the four victims have been kept at the mortuary at Rangamati General Hospital.
