Dhaka, Feb 24 (bdnews24.com) — Bangla Academy has handed the literature awards for the year 2011 to the 10 winners in nine categories.
Bangla Academy chairman professor Anisuzzaman and director general Dr Shamsuzzaman Khan handed over the awards at a function at the main stage of the Amar Ekushey Book Fair on the Academy premises on Friday.
Asim Saha and Kamal Chowdhury received the prize in poetry, Anisul Haque in fiction, Abdullah Abu Sayeed in essay, Bishwajit Ghosh in research, Khaliquzzaman Ilias in translation, Belal Mohammad in writings on Liberation War, Baren Chakrabarty in biography and adventure, Ali Asgar in science-technology and environment and Akhter Hussain in children's literature.
Each of the winners received a cash award of Tk 100,000, a certificate and a crest.
Shamsuzzaman claimed that the awards were acceptable to everyone and said the award has been given following a democratic system.
"It's not possible to satisfy all at the same time, but the academy awards have been acceptable to all this year," he added.
Prof Anisuzzaman who presided over the function said: "Bangla Academy Literature Award is the recognition to creative works of the Bangladeshi writers. Most of the time the award goes to the proper nominees though sometimes unqualified (writers) receive the award on political considerations."
He also said the award helps inspire the writers to come up with something new.
