Police have arrested two men on charges related to the killing of a supporter of an independent candidate during election-related violence in Mymensingh-1 (Haluaghat-Dhobaura) constituency.
The clash occurred on Friday between supporters of BNP candidate Emran Saleh Prince and independent candidate Salman Omar Rubel.
During the altercation, Nazrul Islam, 46, was stabbed to death.
Dhobaura Police Station chief Md Shafiqul Islam said on Saturday morning that a night operation led to the arrests of Adam Ali, 54, and Md Dulal Mia.The Mymensingh-1 seat features a contest between BNP Joint Secretary General Emran Saleh and Salman Omar, who is also a member of the Haluaghat BNP.
According to police and witnesses, after inaugurating his election office at Ershad Bazar, Salman was returning when supporters of Emran suddenly attacked Nazrul.
He was taken to Dhobaura Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
“[Emran’s] supporters attacked us without provocation. My supporter Nazrul was injured in the attack and later died at hospital. I demand the immediate arrest of those involved in the killing,” Salman said.
Denying the allegation, Emran said he was not fully aware of the incident in Haluaghat. “From what I have initially heard, the issue stemmed from a family dispute. There is an attempt to give it a political angle.”
He added that preliminary information suggested a dispute between relatives who live next to each other.
“The person who died was previously a supporter of our party. If wrongdoing is confirmed, we will take action,” Emran said.
Officer Shafiqul said the man died from knife wounds during a brawl between two factions. Officers have inspected the site, and legal proceedings are currently in progress.
Additional Police Superintendent Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed that the confrontation involved followers of the two rival candidates.
