The Election Commission (EC) has published the draft of its updated voter list ahead of the local government elections.

The draft list was published locally by election offices on Sunday.

At noon, EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said in a briefing that the number of voters in the draft list has increased by 309,315. The total number of voters in the country is now 128,632,555.

Once the 13th parliamentary elections were held in February, the Election Commission led by AMM Nasir Uddin began preparing to organise the elections for the councils at the union, municipality, Upazila, and city corporation levels. The local government polls are scheduled to begin from October this year.

According to the voter list published on May 14, the number of voters had stood at 128,323,240. Then, with the local elections in mind, new names were listed until Jul 31. The draft of this update was published on Sunday. The EC will publish the final list on Aug 31 after resolving claims and objections.

On Sunday, EC Secretary Akhtar said at the Nirbachan Bhaban that the number of voters in the country increased by about 300,000 from May 14 to July 31.

“This list is for the next elections. If the election date is fixed or changed, the commission will take another decision [regarding the extension of the voter registration period]. In this case, they will be included in the supplementary list.”

Code of Conduct Being Sent to the Ministry

The draft code of conduct for the city corporation, district council, Upazila council, municipal council and union council elections is being sent to the Ministry of Law and Parliamentary Affairs, said EC Secretary Akhtar.

He said, “The recommendations for amending the law have not been sent yet. The document is being processed, and we will send it when it is finished.”

BNP Collects Two Nomination Forms for Presidential Election

Akhtar said that the distribution of nomination forms for the presidential election has started. The BNP delegation came and took two nomination forms on Sunday.

“So far, no other party has collected nomination forms from us.”

According to the announced schedule, the last day for filing nominations is Aug 13. The nominees will be scrutinised on Aug 16, and the last chance for withdrawal is Aug 18. The vote is scheduled for Aug 20.
