Bangladesh seeks UN support in investigation into Hadi’s killing

The government says it is determined to identify those responsible for the killing

The government has sought the cooperation of the United Nations Human Rights Office to ensure a fair investigation and justice in the killing of Sharif Osman bin Hadi.

The Chief Advisor’s Office (CAO) confirmed the development in a media statement issued on Sunday.

According to the statement, the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh in Geneva sent a formal note verbale to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on Feb 6, following instructions from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The cooperation of the UN Human Rights Office has been sought to provide necessary technical and institutional support in the investigation into the murder,” the statement said.

Quoting the Bangladesh Mission in Geneva, the statement added that any response from the OHCHR would be conveyed to the foreign ministry as soon as it is received.

Reiterating its position, the government said it was determined to identify those responsible for the killing and bring them to justice.

The statement also said the investigation would be carried out with “maximum transparency and accountability”, in line with international human rights standards.
